Knowing About Psychology Graduate Programs

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Today, the wide development of Internet has also helped online education develop. You can earn a graduate degree, Master’s and doctoral, in Psychology either through a regular grad school/university or through an online college.

Before applying you should do thorough homework about the schools, their curriculum, reputation, teaching approach (some schools are research-oriented whereas some schools emphasize coursework and practical training), financial aid, and career opportunities after completing the course. “Graduate Study In Psychology”, an annual publication of the American Psychological Association, is a mine of information on schools, courses and career prospects in psychology in America. Almost all reputable schools contribute to this book.

To enroll for a graduate program you should have a bachelor’s degree with a high GPA from an accredited college. You also need to get an excellent GRE score and prescribed number (generally three) of recommendation letters from your undergraduate instructors. Any research/work experience in psychology would be an added advantage.

Many schools require the applicant to write a comprehensive Statement of Purpose (SoP) justifying his/her candidature, career aspirations, why s/he wants to study from that school and why s/he chose a particular program.

Though a bachelor’s degree in psychology is very helpful, it is not compulsory. If you can convincingly demonstrate your interest and your ability to succeed in the area, admission should not be very difficult. You can ask your undergraduate professors to vouch for your capability to do justice to the course in their customary recommendation letters. Before applying, you can also try taking short-term certificate courses in psychology to prove your interest.

Grad schools are very selective in filtering the applications, since psychology is a niche area. The admission rate is less than 5% in some leading schools. You should apply to at least 4-5 schools of first choice, and another 4-5 schools of second choice. You should also finalize funding sources before admissions. Student aid websites provide the necessary information about funding; many universities, too, help through fellowships and assistantships.

A Master’s degree takes around two years and a doctoral degree 4 to 6 years to complete. Students who want more clinical training and are not very interested in research can go for a PsyD, “Doctor of Psychology,” instead of a traditional Ph.D. But it is an expensive program and admission is much tougher.

Psychology offers a wide range of career openings. The American Psychology Society, American Psychological Association and various other organizations list the latest job openings.

After finishing your learning programs and getting a master degree. You can work in some of the major work areas such as Research, teaching, clinical/criminal psychology, social counseling, organizational behavior, employee training and development, industrial relations, change management, leadership development, quality of work, organizational development etc.

What Do You Know About Behavioral Psychology And Traumatic Events?

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Behavioral Psychology is a special field which is studied by many researchers. When having spare time, you can visit the library and learn a bit about behavioral psychology and how it affects a person. There are all sorts of researchers who study the behavioral problems of men, women and children. Their research also includes the trauma associated with certain behaviors, and all of this information is on file at the library.

The research might help someone who realizes that they have a behavioral problem, or it may just lend a hand in helping a parent try to figure out what makes any person in their family act the way they do. They also provide helpful information and advice on how to help people change their behavior. They can learn to make the changes on their own or with the help of a clinical behavioral psychologist.

There are many different things that can cause behavioral problems with people. Some of those include depression, built up anger, and traumas in their life. All of these events can make it very difficult for a person to control their behavior and be comfortable with whom they are to the point where they can live a normal, and healthy life.

Depression is the leading cause of behavioral problems with teens and young adults and is also the leading cause of suicide. It can cause a person to always be in a bad mood or not want to interact with people or do everyday activities. The good news is that people that suffer from depression can be treated with medicine and a wide assortment of therapies. Once treated the person will be in a better mood and want to interact with other people and be able to cope with everyday activities. With the right kind of therapy a person can overcome their depression.

When a person begins to get angry and does not want to show any of their feelings, their anger begins to build up inside them, and after a time it become more than anger. Those feelings turn to rage. Built up anger is not healthy for a person, because when that person has had enough, they tend to explode. When this happens, the person can be very dangerous to themselves and other people.

Getting angry is not healthy for many different reasons. Anger can cause a person to be physically sick, and can also cause them to form a mental illness. Any type of angry behavior can get out of control very quickly and cause them to get in a lot of trouble. It can also cause them to hurt somebody else. This can be treated with therapy and sometimes the feelings of anger might have to be controlled with medication.

The frequencies that trauma has occurred in a person’s life will also cause them to have behavioral problems. Some people deal with traumas in their life by blocking them out of their memory completely, but when they occur several times during a month, the person might get depressed and withdraw from everyone due to depression.

Many people never express how impacted they are emotionally until a similar effect influence them again. These effects make them to strike out in defense or cause them to withdraw emotionally into a state that they will be in for the rest of their lives. Therapy can help a person deal with the traumas in their life, but no matter how you deal with the traumas, they will still be in your memory. Sometimes just talking to a therapist is enough, and some people need medication and therapy.
